Why holidays are important

IMG_0416Two years ago on the last day of my holidays I sat down in the air conditioned reception area of our hotel and outlined the details of a game for training trainers, called the Learning Loop. This idea had been percolating for some time, but needed some quiet reflective time away from my normal busy life to bring it to life. So what do you do on holiday?

  • Check your emails from time to time?
  • Keep your twitter feed going….. in case anyone forgets about you?
  • Keep an eye on LinkedIn to make sure you do not miss out?

Or do you really just leave it all behind and get a proper rest? In my experience, taking a real break away from everything has many benefits:

  • It allows you to focus on what is really important and that does not always mean work!
  • It gives your brain time to think about other things other than what is right in front of you, and you may get some interesting insights while doing this.
  • Relaxing and taking your focus off your problems, allows your subconscious to work on those problems and maybe come up with something new
  • You realise some that some things will naturally work themselves out without any interference from you
  • Stepping back can give others the opportunity to play a part

……..plus many many more

So what do you find happens when you take a holiday? Why have you found them to be important?

My husband, Gareth, who also has started blogging, is an avid reader and I have been recommending some books for him to read. Bearing in mind, that I prefer short books with a simple pithy message, I thought “Gung Ho!” by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles, would be a good one for him to read..

I then thought – he is bound to blog about it once he has read it and so ….. slightly embarrassed, I am blogging about it before he finishes it!!!

This book is a great story about how you can help people in an organisation be motivated. the three key principles are based on three animals and the way that they are in nature:

  1. The Spirit of the Squirrel
  2. The Way of the Beaver
  3. The Gift of the Goose

Let’s look at each one in turn to see how you can apply the principles:

1. The Spirit of the Squirrel – Worthwhile work driven by goals and values

So what makes worthwhile work?

Knowing we make the world a better place with everyone working towards a shared goal. In the organisation the values guide all plans, decisions and actions


2. The Way of the Beaver – Putting workers in control of achieving the goal

How do we put workers in control?

We create a playing field with clearly marked territory. Thoughts, feelings, needs and dreams are respected, listened to and acted upon. Employees are able, but challenged


3. The Gift of the Goose – Cheering each other on

How do we do this, without it feeling forced?

Active or passive, congratulations must be true.  Cheer progress. Enthusiasm equals mission times cash and congratulations (e = mc2)

So, if you are like me and NOT an avid reader, but like learning new stuff, then I hope I have saved you some time or maybe I have spurred some of you onto reading the book yourselves? By the way, it is a thin book and you could probably get through it in an evening!

Is life getting tougher?

IMG_1713Brave little smiley person…… burdened with all those worries, finding life a struggle and yet still managing to smile. Does that remind you of anyone? If it is you and you are a trainer, here are a few little ways that you can help yourself  to work smarter and faster with great results:

  1. Learn about accelerated learning, it can cut prep time down by 30%
  2. Find out who your stakeholders are and who can support you
  3. Set great objectives by engaging with the stakeholder
  4. Ask your stakeholders to prioritise the work according to the needs of the organisation
  5. Learn how to ask great questions to dig to the root of a problem – it might not be a learning need!!!
  6. Think of yourself as a facilitator not a trainer – take the pressure off and share the responsibility of learning
  7. Read short punchy articles on how to be more productive
  8. Join a forum and ask others for advice!
  9. Design some activities that are generic, which can add interest and excitement
